Madeleine's Gift

*UPDATE October 4, 2011*
Madeleine's battle with cancer ended on September 27, 2011. Click here to watch local TV coverage.

*UPDATE September 8, 2011*
Madeleine is gravely ill and hospice has advised her family to be at her side. More information can be found on her Facebook page, Prayers for Chingy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to take a break from blogging about sugar, cookies, and cakes for this post, and talk about a very special little girl.

I'd like you to meet my neighbor, Madeleine. Madeleine is 8 years old, she will be 9 in October. Up until this summer, Madeleine was a normal, happy, active girl who loved Spongebob and riding her bike. Then one day in July, she came inside after riding her bike, and collapsed. Doctors found multiple tumors in her brain. She was diagnosed with Stage IV Glioblastoma.

Madeleine has had brain surgery to remove the two largest tumors, but there are many which are inoperable due to their location. The surgery left her in a wheelchair, unable to move her legs or left arm. She is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

Madeleine's prognosis is bleak, but her spirits are high. Her life spirit shines brightly despite her grave illness.

Her parents are not able to work, in order to care for her and spend as much time as possible with her. They are faced with numerous unexpected medical expenses.

If you participate in a prayer list, please add Madeleine Frady to your prayers. And if you are able, please consider giving a donation to her family to help them in this terrible time of need. Madeleine's web site with donation information is http://www.madeleinesgift.org/.

Ok, I lied, I'm not taking a complete break from talking about sugar art. This wouldn't be a complete CakeBoss post without some kind of sugar art! I made SpongeBob cookies for Madeleine tonight. I hope they bring a smile to her sweet face.

  14. I am positive that Madeline will survive. Look at her; she even has the face of a survivor. She will be back on her bike before you know it! I've also had a tumor in my brain, but with help from God, I am now back on my feet functioning perfectly. My prayers are with little Madeline and all of her faithful family.

  19. Sometimes, I feel bad for myself for having a little scab on my knee or something like that. But now that I see that Madeline is having to deal with the tragity of brain tumors, I think differently. It is SOOOOOOO sad to see her like this. I hope one day, she will grow into a active child like me. When she is in fifth grade (like me), even till then, she will live on in my memories, dreams, and prayers. MERRY X-MAS!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Thank you for sharing this story. I have a daughter about Madeleine's age and every day I feel so incredibly fortunate to have a healthy child while others face these kinds of very unfair and unpredicatble situations. I will attempt to deposit money into their account via a Wells Fargo bank location in Portland, OR today. I hope that they are able to arrest the growth of these tumors and put her into a long remission.

  22. Has this family talked to any of the specialists at St. Jude's? They are renowned for advance treatment of brain cancers in children. The son of one of my colleagues went there and is in remission. Might be worth checking out and I understand that St. Jude's has a great financial assistance program. Some people pay nothing.

  35. As I read this, I say an added prayer for this beautiful child. For the family expenses, the SpongeBob cookies are adorable. Will the school(s) allow you to sell them as a fundraiser? It may not be much, but at least it is a little something that may go a long ways. God Bless you for bringing her life to our light.

  54. Thank you for sharing Madeline's story--she is in my prayers in hopes that she will one day be able to do the things she was once able to do. I too have a similar story--my cousin's son who was diagnosed with ALD. A little boy who was able to do everything and now is in a wheelchair not able to do anything at all. It's amazing how people come together to help! Don't stop believing and have hope! xoxo
